Westerbeke's New 55 Horsepower Engine

The Westerbeke 55C Four, rated at 55 horsepower (40 kW), is powered by a 4-cylinder, 2.18 liter, naturally aspirated, diesel engine. This new model has been engineered to run at a low 3000-rpm. Its overall dimensions are compact, particularly the height, which permits easier installations in engine spaces on most pleasure craft and small working

vessels. The 55C is backed by Westerbeke’s unsurpassed 5-year limited propulsion engine warranty. This engine also produces a very impressive 110 lb./ft. torque at only 1500-rpm! Torque is the attribute of marine engines which most influences their ability to push nonplaning boats through water. Low engine speed also contributes to quiet operation, less vibration for more pleasant powering and reduces stress on engines contributing to a longer service life. The 55C Four comes equipped with a transmission oil cooler. Low oil pressure and high coolant temperature alarms are pre-wired for a plug-in connection to a Captain or Admiral instrument panel. The 55C Four has incorporated customer requested design features such as an easily accessed, front mounted, hot water heater connection in the thermostat bypass circuit. As with most Westerbeke engines, a self-bleeding fuel system is standard on the 55C Four. The 55C Four offers a standard 50 amp alternator and optional 72 or 100 amp single output or 135, 160, and 190 amp dual output alternators. A large list of accessories and transmissions is available to tailor this engine to meet individual installation requirements such as refrigeration compressor mounts, hydraulic transmissions and varied gear ratios.
