EYE IN THE SKY HELPS NAB BOAT THIEVES IN MIAMI PDF Print E-mail
SeaKey® System Leads Police to Stolen Larson Cruiser LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (March 20, 2005) – A boat stolen from a Miami residence on March 1 was recovered hours later after its position was pinpointed by its SeaKey satellite communications system, accord to the Miami-Dade Police Department. “This was the fastest recovery of a stolen boat I’ve seen in 15 years with the department,” said Detective Ben Rawley of the Miami-Dade Police auto theft division. “I also think it’s the first time a satellite system has been used to recover a stolen boat in Miami.” SeaKey, a product of Volvo Penta, is a telematics system that uses GPS and a satellite communications link to provide a wide array of services to boat owners. SeaKey is standard equipment on all Larson Cabrio models over 26 feet in length, including a
2004 Larson Cabrio 310 purchased just before Christmas by Ernesto Azamar of Miami. On March 1, the Larson was parked on its trailer in the driveway alongside Azamar’s Miami residence “I had not even put the boat in the water yet,” said Azamar. “My wife left to pick up our daughter at school at about 1:00 p.m., and when she returned the boat was gone.” According to the police report, thieves cut a lock on a side gate to get into the yard, and then opened the main gate to the driveway, hooked the trailer to a truck and drove away. Azamar had not yet activated Geofence, the automatic SeaKey theft notification service, on his boat. When his wife called to tell him the boat was missing, he contacted Larson dealer Todd Littlejohn at Freedom Marine in Deerfield Beach, Fla., who in turn called SeaKey. At 3:19 p.m. SeaKey operators were tracking the boat, and by 5:00 p.m. its location at a residence in the Cutler Ridge neighborhood of Miami, more than 20 miles from Azamar’s home, was pinpointed and the location was relayed to the police. The police discovered the registration stickers for the boat and trailer in a trash can behind the house, and suspects were arrested. “The Miami-Dade police were fabulous,” said Azamar. “We had the boat back home a day later.” SeaKey was introduced in 2002 and is currently installed on more than 8,000 boats in North America, according to SeaKey spokesman Jan Hellaker. SeaKey’s Response Center offers 24 – hour security and convenience services. SeaKey operators can alert the boat owner by telephone or email to theft or water in the bilge, for example, even when the owner is thousands of miles away from the boat. SeaKey would also contact the U.S. Coast Guard in case of an off-shore emergency. SeaKey can be used to track the boat’s location while underway, so family or friends can use a home computer to monitor the progress of a voyage. SeaKey operators also offer a concierge service for dock reservations, weather information, or assistance with fuel, rental cars or repairs.
