Gelcoat Fade 2007/07/03 15:47 Karma: 0
I peeled some vinyl lettering off my boat recently. The color of the gelcoat does not match the other areas of the boat, as it has faded.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Get some marine rubbing compound, and try to rub it out.

You will have to apply a good rubbing compound and rub out the entire boat to get a match. Any gel coat that was covered by decals will not have faded and the only way to get the two areas to match is a lot of elbow grease. If you use an electric buffer to do this, be very careful, as the gel coat is, at most, .030" thick.
Good luck.

Rubbing compound comes in various stages of agrissivness. The finer it is the more expensive. I suggest 3M" Micro finishing" compound, about 20 bucks a quart. This material is designed for use with a buffer and is safe for clearcoat. i will do a good job on gelcoat without buffing through. (unless you really overdo it). You can get it at most professional automotive paint suppliers.

Do NOT buy 3M "rubbing" compound unless your boat is really baked out as it will rub thru quickly unless you are really skilled in the use of a buffer.
