The Hydrofoil Supported Catamarans (HYSUCAT) is a hybrid of a catamaran hull equipped with a hydrofoil system between the demi-hulls which carries a part of the crafts weight at speed.

The effcient load carrying capability of the hydrofoil system in combination with the inherent stability and pleasant seakeeping properties of the planning catamaran results in a most economical high speed surface craft with excellent seakeeping behaviour. The specific hull design is an asymmetrical catamaran hull with a centre-pod rounded tunnel. Specially designed and patented sprayrails which were incorporated into 24 degree deadrise hulls.

One of the problems with the concept of supporting a sailing boat on hydrofoils is that the boat needs to reach a certain speed before the foils become effective (like a plane needs a runway to get to the right speed before it can take off) Below this 'hump' speed (from graph of drag versus speed) the foils simply add drag due to the increased wetted area. In the case of a motor boat, speed is generally not a problem however sailing boats are relatively slow.

I am not sure if hydrofoil is for load carrying or Speed, but all i know is hydrofoil let a boat go faster by getting the hull out of the water. When a normal boat moves forward, most of the energy expended goes into moving the water in front of the boat out of the way (by pushing the hull through it). Hydrofoils lift the hull out of the water so that you only have to overcome the drag on the foils instead of all of the drag on the hull.
